On 2nd February, we celebrated Candlemas in School. The Classes took it in turns to dip their wicks into the wax, and through patience, gradually built up the layers to eventually make a candle.  Some of the older classes managed to make beautiful twisted candles by dipping two wicks at once.

Candlemas is celebrated on February 2, the date that falls halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. It is a celebration of the noticeable lengthening of the days, marking the start of banishing Winter. 

In Kindergarten, the children made an earth candle and rang a little bell to wake up the spring bulbs. 

If Candlemas Day be fair and bright
Winter will have another flight.
If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain,
Winter won’t come again.

If Candlemas Day be dry and fair,
The half of the Winter’s to come and Mair;
If Candlemas Day be wet and foul,
The half of the winter’s gone at Yule.

In their Biomes main lesson block, Class VI have spent the last three weeks building up their own maps of the world.  Each biome was introduced with a description of the climate, weather, landscape, vegetation and animal life, along with stories and images.  Each day the class would fill in more of their map until at the end of the block they are full and completed with care and attention.

In French this week, Monsieur Azarian celebrated with delicious homemade Le Gateau des Rois, a cake traditionally shared at Epiphany.  All the children wore golden crowns! 

Class II have been learning about trees.
